Reaction: Chicago White Sox knock off House, Cleveland Indians

The Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians this afternoon as they drove in runs off of newly appointed starter T.J. House. House, who did pitch a respectable game, gave up six hits and four runs over six innings. His counterpart today was non roster invitee Scott Carroll. Carroll pitched three innings while giving up one run. 

House did pitch 18 games last season as a starter, so he is not a new starter in that sense. However, since there was plenty of competition this spring, there was no guarantee until Paul Hoynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group reported the news this afternoon.

After this loss, the Indians dropped to 11-15 overall in Spring Training as teams prepare to play the last week of games before Opening Day.  Cleveland got on the board first as Jason Kipnis scored off of a Carlos Santana RBI  groundout.  That lead was held until the fourth inning when Chicago drove in three runs.

Tyler Flowers hit an RBI double while George Kottaras knocked in a two run double.  Conor Gillaspie drove in a run in the fifth inning.

What Stood Out?

Yes, there has been injuries to the pitching staff this spring, but House is putting together solid pitching performances which should not be overlooked.  He does have a .500 record thus far, but also has nineteen strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings.  With Josh Tomlin and Danny Salazar now in Triple-A and House has a guaranteed spot in the rotation, I am excited with what he can do for the team and would expect continued solid numbers from him this season.

After House’s day was over, Scott Downs, Kyle Crockett, and Jeff Manship all pitched very well in relief.  Each pitched one inning and gave up no hits showcasing their skills and the overall depth and talent of Cleveland’s bullpen.
