Cleveland Indians: Jerry Sands Promoted; Austin Adams Optioned to Triple-A

Sands promoted, Adams optioned; Tomlin moved to 60-day DL

The Cleveland Indians made a few notable roster moves on Friday, promoting

from Columbus, while optioning

to Triple-A. The Tribe also transferred

from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. Tomlin underwent successful arthroscopic surgery and will need 3-to-4 months of rehab.

The Indians had carried an extra arm in the bullpen over the past several seasons, but with the progress of the starting rotation, and consistently going deeper into their outings the necessity for the deeper bullpen isn’t there. Although Trevor Bauer only went six innings, he was masterful in his start and looks to build off of that.

Corey Kluber was simply phenomenal in the loss, and Carlos Carrasco made the Indians look good on the money they spent to extend him–as well as Kluber. Those three alone will make the ability to keep an extra bat on the bench possible.

Sands stayed in Major League camp all spring, and was thought to have a solid chance at the final roster spot before Terry Francona chose Adams. He was signed as a minor league free agent this December after spending time with the Dodgers and Rays. In the spring, he hit .304 (14-for-46) with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs in 22 games. He appeared in 10 games at first base, seven games in right field and two games in left field.
