What does the Jose Ramirez demotion mean for the Cleveland Indians?

The Jose Ramirez era as the Cleveland Indians‘ shortstop may be over.  According to Jeff Passan, the Cleveland Indians have optioned the struggling infielder to Triple-A Columbus after today’s loss the Orioles.

The Cleveland Indians have yet to confirm the transaction but the move would appear to make sense. Mike Aviles has subplanted Ramirez as the starting shortstop the last week, which has relegated him to the bench. Despite Ramirez’s struggles, he’s still a younger player (only 22) with upside. He’s the type of player you want playing everyday, whether it’s in the majors or minors. 

Passan’s speculation that top prospect Francisco Lindor is the one coming up has also not been confirmed though it too would make sense.  Lindor doesn’t have the best minor league numbers but has been on base in twelve straight for the Columbus Clippers, and his defense remains some of the best in the minors at the shortstop position.

There’s of course the chance that Zach Walters will get the call and not Lindor. Walters has the ability to play multiple positions, including shortstop and could form a bit of a platoon with Aviles at shortstop for the time being.  Walters would also give the Indians another option at thirdbase for the struggling Lonnie Chisenhall. UPDATE: Per Ken Rosenthal, the Indians will be calling up Walters and not Lindor.  

Again though, the Cleveland Indians have yet to confirm any of this, but Passan and Rosenthal are two very highly reputable baseball reporters so it stands to reason that they have good sources and their information is accurate.
