Cleveland Indians Get Demolished By the Chicago Cubs

Could this be the ugliest game the Cleveland Indians have played in recent years? Between bad defense, poor fielding and pitching, the Tribe were demolished early. Shaun Marcum lasted only two innings, giving up six hits and six earned runs. Marcum’s record dropped to 3-2. Chicago’s Tsuyoshi Wada went seven shutout innings while striking out six Tribe batters.

Tonight’s game was tough to watch. Being down ten runs after three innings and using nine pitchers, including two outfielders, it is safe to say if a reset button was an option, Cleveland would have used it.

Key Moments

2nd Inning

Down a 2-0 deficit, Chicago’s Chris Denorfia being already on base from an RBI double scores on Addison Russell‘s two-run home run.

Anthony Rizzo later in the inning hit his own two-run home run. Dexter Fowler scored on the play.

3rd Inning

Now holding a 7-0 lead, the Cubs drove in more runs due to Denorfia. Denorfia hit a three-run home run with Starlin Castro and Kyle Schwarber scoring.

9th Inning

With Tribe pitchers now unavailable, outfielders Ryan Raburn and David Murphy pitched the 9th inning. After already scoring three additional runs, the Cubs unfortunately still were not done.

With Russell, Fowler, and Mike Baxter on base, Murphy gave up a grand slam to Kris Bryant, increasing the lead to 17-0.

The Positives

This game was horrible all around for the Tribe. The good thing is that the team can get up and go redeem themselves tomorrow night.

The Negatives

Nick Hagadone came on in relief of Marcum but could not get a batter out. He gave up 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

Anytime a team has to make their position players move to the pitching mound, it is not a good thing. Understandably position players do not practice pitching. Anytime people have to watch position players pitch, typically they watch plenty of struggles. Tonight was no different as Raburn and Murphy gave up 7 runs.

Check It Out

Cleveland needs a short-term memory after tonight’s game. The Tribe are set for another game against the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night at 7:10 PM. Danny Salazar gets the start for the Indians. Salazar has a 6-2 record with a 3.54 ERA. In his last 7 starts, he has pitched well, racking up a 3-1 record with a 3.38 ERA.

Jason Hammel gets the start for Chicago. He has a 5-2 record with a 2.81 ERA in 12 starts this season. Hammel also has been pitching great over his last 7 starts. He has a 3-1 record with a 2.22 ERA over that time.
