Cleveland Indians: White Sox Talk to Sandy Alomar About Bench Coach Position

The offseason has arrived for the Cleveland Indians, which leads to talks about who’s coming and who’s going. That conversation isn’t always relegated to players as the White Sox have spoken with Indians’ coach Sandy Alomar about their opening after firing Mark Parent. Could the Tribe lose one of its most popular former players to the White Sox?

Even with a “disappointing” season after high expectations to start the year, Alomar likes what he sees from the young group of players like Francisco Lindor, Giovanny Urshela, Jose Ramirez and more. The strong finish shows the Tribe are trending in the right direction, but the move may simply be a move of opportunity should he decide to leave.

Indians’ skipper Terry Francona is firmly entrenched in his job (whether you agree or not), and although the Sox are bringing back Robin Ventura in 2016 that leash will be very, very short. If Alomar has aspirations of becoming a big league manager, this may be one of his quickest ways to it.

In recent years, Alomar has interviewed for several managerial jobs but of course, wasn’t hired. When Manny Acta was fired, he did serve as the interim manager for the Indians. As of now, Seattle, Washington, San Diego and Miami are currently looking for managers, but Alomar said he has not talked to any of those clubs.

Those four openings, as well as the Indians and White Sox all have their pros and cons. While Francona isn’t going to manage forever, many don’t see him leaving Cleveland until HE decided to leave. The White Sox spent a lot of money this offseason to essentially go nowhere. Washington has talent but dysfunction. San Diego now has several big money deals, but no results to show. And Miami, of course, has some young stars like Giancarlo Stanton but not much to show after that.

While only a coach, seeing Alomar go elsewhere and don a different uniform would be upsetting to see. But he’s a wise baseball man, and getting his shot to manage should precede fans’ feelings.
