Cleveland Indians: Team Twitter Account Trolls its Own Fans

Score one for the Cleveland Indians’ team Twitter account

Were you one of the Cleveland Indians fans packing up their glove and cleats and headed to Progressive Field today when the Tribe’s Twitter account sent this out?

Oh, so many dreams to be fulfilled. Memories to be made. This was a chance to get out there and be an Indians, if just for a little bit. I’m sorry, the Indians will henceforth be known as the Cleveland Dreamcrushers.

This is what the Twitterverse has become. Teams actually troll their own fanbase. No need to wait for “that guy” to show up and do it, the team gets it right out in the open from the start. There was, of course, some backlash from the fans as you might expect. They ranged from the simple”rude”, to “you’ve crushed my dreams..and wasted my vacation time”. And of course, because the poor attendance this season, there were more than a couple of jokes about actually getting 18 people to show up.

Whether you took offense to it or thought it was in good fun–this was an epic start to the offseason by the team Twitter account. And they aren’t afraid to put the word out to help the same fans that they may have upset in the process.

In a world where occasionally it gets a little predictable, having a little fun on social media is a nice break from the norm. And even other teams’ accounts got involved in the fun.

Hopefully, you weren’t one of the fans who saw just the initial tweet and then high-tailed it for Progressive. Maybe you can use the speeding ticket you got en route to the false proposal to swing some free tickets for next season. I mean, there’s likely to be plenty available. I’d say ask via the team’s Twitter account, but after today, I don’t even want to see how that may play out.
