Cleveland Indians Sell C.C. Lee to Japanese Team

According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cleveland Indians sold C.C. Lee to the Saitama Seibu Lions for a sum in the range of $350-500 thousand. Lee had pitched out of the bullpen for the Tribe since 2009, with most of his work happening in the minor leagues. In 34 big-league innings, the right-hander allowed 17 earned runs on 38 hits. While his 33 strikeouts were promising, he never mastered his control over the course of his career.

Control issues, however, were not the big reason for the transaction. As Hoynes reported, the birth of his son led the 29-year-old to want to pitch for a team closer to his home in Taiwan. Also, Lee was out of options, and he would have entered 2016 without a clear spot in the bullpen.

In other news, Patrick Saunders of the Denver post wonders if the Cleveland Indians and Colorado Rockies should swap pitching for outfield help. He notes that either Carlos Gonzalez or Corey Dickerson will strengthen a weakness on a team with October dreams. As great as these players could be, Gonzalez has $37 million left on his contract, and Dickerson has durability questions. It might be better for the Indians to look for a more promising player, albeit one who would cost more in the way of prospects.
