Cleveland Indians Sign Multiple Draft Picks

In addition to signing their 2016 first-round pick, outfielder Will Benson, the Cleveland Indians signed several other draft picks over the weekend. Among the signings, were a trio of top ten round picks, including their third pick in the draft, catcher Logan Ice, their third-round pick RHP Aaron Civale, and their tenth-round pick SS Samad Taylor.

With these three signings, the Indians have now signed five of the 11 players drafted in the top ten rounds or five of the 11 players that count towards the draft pool money. All three of these signings were under-slot deals that saved the Indians even more money. To date, all five signings the Tribe has made in the first ten rounds have been for under slot, with the total savings now at $619,700.

As

explained

before, this savings is almost certainly going to have to be used to sign the Indians second-round pick, high school 3B Nolan Jones who is going to command over-slot money. Slot value for the 55th pick is just $1,59,200 and there’s a very real possibility Jones could get at least $2,000,000, similar to the Tribe’s second pick last year,

Triston McKenzie

who got $2,302,500 as the 42nd pick ($834,100 over slot).

As things stand now, the Indians potentially have an extra $374,980 to spend as well as they are allowed to go over slot by up to five-percent without losing a future draft pick. The Indians have done this in years past and could do it again this year, which would give them nearly one million extra to spend on Jones ($994,680 at this time).

The Indians have also signed a few players outside of the top ten rounds, including some college players from the state of Ohio. The Indians have agreed to terms with both OF Mitch Longo (Ohio University) and LHP Tanner Tully (The Ohio State University).

To date, the Indians have signed at least nine players from rounds 11-40. Slot for these guys is $100,000 and none have been announced as getting more than that to this point. If any player does sign for more in these rounds, the amount over $100,000 goes towards the Tribe’s draft pool (like it did with Luke Wakamatsu last year).

The Indians could also be adding a few more draft picks in the coming days. They are still waiting on Nolan Jones who will be their toughest top ten sign and also on fourth-round pick Shane Bieber, who is still playing college ball as his team, UC Santa Barbara, is still in the College World Series.
