Cleveland Indians Shutout Tigers 6-0 for 8th Straight Win

The Cleveland Indians topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6-0 as Carlos Carrasco threw his first complete game shutout of the season. It was the Tribe’s 8th win in a row and they are now 8-0 against the Tigers this season. They moved to 43-30 on the season with the win and are now five games in first place in the division. The Tigers dropped to 38-37 with the loss and are six games behind the Indians in the division.

For the third time in the last four games, an Indians’ starter pitched a complete game and for the second time, it was a shutout. Carrasco joined Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer while throwing his third career complete game shutout going nine innings allowing no runs on just four hits. He struck out seven and walked just one. He moved to 3-2 on the season with the win and lowered his season ERA to 2.73.

The Indians offense played a bit of home run derby against Tigers’ pitching, slugging four solo home runs. Carlos Santana got the Indians on the board with a leadoff home run to start the game in the 1st inning off Tigers’ starter Anibal Sanchez (4-8). It was his team-leading 16th of the season. Francisco Lindor added solo home run two batters later to make it 2-0 Indians after one.  The Indians made it 3-0 in the 2nd inning on an RBI single by Rajai Davis, scoring Tyler Naquin who had a double and triple on the night.

Jose Ramirez made it 4-0 Indians in the top of the 3rd on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice groundout. The score remained 4-0 until the 8th inning when Lindor hit his second home run of the game (his 10th of the year) off Tigers’ reliever Mark Lowe to make it 5-0 Cleveland. Yan Gomes joined the homer parade with his 8th home run of the season making it 6-0 Indians. The only negative from the game for the Indians came in the 7th inning when starting second baseman Jason Kipnis was replaced by Michael Martinez. The Indians announced that Kipnis left due to illness though that’s all the information that’s been released to this point.

The Indians will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon as Josh Tomlin (8-1 3.32 ERA) is set to take on Justin Verlander (7-5, 3.78). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm at Comerica Park. The Indians will then head to Atlanta to take on the Braves in an interleague matchup.
