Cleveland Indians Place McAllister on DL; Recall Pitchers Adams and Colon

The Cleveland Indians announced a couple roster moves before tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, recalling right-handed pitchers Austin Adams and Joseph Colon from Triple-A Columbus. To make room they’ve optioned right-hander Mike Clevinger back to Triple-A and placed Zach McAllister on the 15-day disabled list with a hip injury.

More from Away Back Gone

Adams returns to the Indians after spending a short time with the club earlier in the year. In 7 2/3 innings with the big league club, he has a 2.35 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and has struck out 12. In his career spanning parts of the last three seasons, he has a 4.31 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 48 innings of work. He’s spent the bulk of the season at Triple-A where he’s struck out 28 in 28 innings with a 4.18 ERA out of the Columbus Clippers’ bullpen.

Colon will be making his first trip to the big leagues after spending the seven years in the minors leagues. Colon joined the Indians’ organization back in 2009 when they made him a 12th round pick, and he was recently added to the 40-man roster last week. Colon was in the news over the winter after testing positive for a banned drug and received a 50-game suspension, which he served early this season. Since returning to action he’s pitched very well for the Columbus Clippers posted a 0.59 ERA and 0.78 WHIP in 13 appearances out of the bullpen.

Zach McAllister heads to the disabled list with “hip discomfort” after really struggling the last few outings. Just yesterday he allowed four runs in just 1/3 of an inning and has seen his season ERA bloom to 5.40 after a promising start to the season. He’s been striking guys out still with 28 in 26 2/3 innings; however, he has walked 15 and allowed four home runs in his 30 appearances.  Thinks have been worse since the beginning of May as he has a 7.94 ERA in 19 appearances and has a 1.83 WHIP.

Mike Clevinger made just one appearance during his recent stint with the big league club, throwing two shutout innings of relief in Tuesday’s blowout win over the Detroit Tigers. It was his four appearance and first in relief at the big league level after making three starts earlier in the year. Overall Clevinger has a 7.71 ERA in 16 1/3 innings and is 0-1 with 14 strikeouts. He’ll return to Columbus to work as a starter again where he’s 8-0 with a 2.77 ERA in 13 starts.

Next: Could the Indians Trade for Jason Motte?

There has been no word yet on how long McAllister will be out but it’s safe to say the Indians will likely give him as much time as needed. Clevinger was only expected to be up for a short time to give the Indians an extra arm with the added work the bullpen has gotten recently so there’s no surprise he was sent out today. What remains to be seen is how long a guy like Colon will last in the bullpen as he’s been seen more as an organizational filler recently. Adams could be getting an extended look with the club before the trade deadline as well.
