Cleveland Indians pitcher Cody Anderson has been shut down, according to Paul Hoynes, meaning several players may see some big league action in 2017.

Injuries are a part of any Cleveland Indians season, and the bug has already hit the team in 2017, according to a tweet from Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com

As stated by Hoynes, Cody Anderson was coming off surgery, but his absence means a pitcher like Mike Clevinger may be next in line for any spot starts throughout the year. That, or even a full-time position if someone goes down or is performing poorly.

Anderson never really fit in with the starting rotation, but you still hate to see a player go down so close to the start of the season.

He actually began the 2016 season as a starter in place of Trevor Bauer, but he could never keep his ERA low enough to hold down the spot. His last start as a regular member of the rotation came on June 7, when his ERA had spiked to an ugly 7.48.

He did some decent work out of the bullpen the rest of the season, but his role in 2017 was set to be either a long-relief guy, or as a spot starter. But with his 2016 woes and the success had by Clevinger, perhaps this injury won’t change much in the overall plans.

Regardless, injuries stink and we hope the best for Anderson as me tries to make his return to the club. After so many injuries in 2016, fans are hoping that this will be one of the only ones in 2017.
