The Cleveland Indians decided to make Yandy Diaz the starting third baseman over Giovanny Urshela. Did the team make the right choice?

Fans had spent time speculating what the Cleveland Indians would do with Jason Kipnis out, and the team recently announced that Jose Ramirez will start the season at second base and Yandy Diaz will start at third, leaving Giovanny Urshela as the odd man out.

Both players have legitimate claims to the job, with each presenting visible pros and cons. Diaz has his problems on defense, while Urshela has his on offense, but it seems that Diaz’s skill on offense outweighed the negatives of his defense.

Urshela is known to be a great defender, but perhaps the Indians would rather add more pop to the lineup and hope for the best with Diaz in the field. This seems to be the case and it will provide for some interesting debates throughout April, or for however long it takes Kipnis to come back.

The purpose of this article is to talk about why the Indians chose Diaz over Urshela, who one of our writers thought was the logical choice to start at third if they went with Ramirez at second.

The case for Urshela is argued by Duane Rohrbacher, while the case for Diaz is made by Steven Kubitza. Be sure to let us know your thoughts on the debate in the comments section following this article.

Let’s now start the debate by taking a look at the case for Urshela.
