The Cleveland Indians made their move right before Monday’s trade deadline, acquiring Joe Smith from the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Cleveland Indians have seen a recent resurgence all throughout the roster, but there was still room for help in the bullpen.

The Indians decided to help that need by reportedly trading for Joe Smith, who pitched in Cleveland from 2009-2013.

Ken Rosenthal tweeted out the news first.

The return for the Toronto Blue Jays is rather nice, but neither player traded seemed to have a legitimate spot with the Indians at any point in the next several years. And right now, this team is doing whatever it takes to chase a World Series this season.

Smith joined the Toronto Blue Jays this season and has been having a great year. He currently has a K/9 rate of 12.9, the highest of his career by a high mark.

He has allowed 13 runs in 35.2 innings, but eight of those runs have come in three appearances. So aside from a few games, he has been mostly lights out.

This move helps the bullpen by taking the bulk of the burden off Andrew Miller and Cody Allen. With Boone Logan out, most of the workload has fallen upon Miller, Allen and Bryan Shaw. Nick Goody has had a solid season, but Smith can come in as a reliable veteran piece right away in a city where he is comfortable playing.

Some fans want blockbuster deals, but that isn’t always possible or even the best idea. This team has been on a roll recently, and trading top prospects for players such as Yu Darvish or Zach Britton may hurt the team in the long-term while also disrupting the team’s current success.

There is still time for some last-minute moves, but expect the Indians to be more active in August by claiming players off waivers and making subsequent deals.
