Mickey Callaway is looking to build his coaching staff in New York, and his latest choice could be another former Cleveland Indians coach.

The Cleveland Indians lost Mickey Callaway to the New York Mets, only to replace him right away with Carl Willis. Seems simple enough, but the changes don’t stop there.

Callaway was in charge of the entire staff, but former Indians pitcher Jason Bere served as the bullpen coach for the past three seasons. Now he may be joining Callaway in New York as the pitching coach, according to cleveland.com.

Bere was likely thinking he could replace Callaway in Cleveland, but the decision to go with Willis led to the Indians and Bere to part ways.

It makes sense for both sides, as Bere wants to move up to the next level of being a pitching coach, while Willis may want to bring in a fresh face for his staff.

The problem with being a great team is that the coaches on the staff are often sought out for other opportunities, but that is all part of the game. Coaches like Brad Mills and Sandy Alomar will continue to be options for managerial vacancies the same way Callaway was before getting his job with the Mets.

The key is for Terry Francona to remain the constant. He is the glue that holds the team together. Losing coaches could hurt other managers, but Francona has been in this situation before and should be able to make it seem like nothing ever changed.

As with Callaway, it is nice to see Bere be up for a promotion after so many great years with the Indians. All the talk has been about how great the bullpen has been for the past few years, and Bere is a main reason why.
