The Cleveland Indians lost a power bat when Carlos Santana left in free agency. The front office went out and picked up Yonder Alonso to fill that void and so far, so good.

The Cleveland Indians season is underway and their biggest free agency pickup has been off to a great start. Yonder Alonso has put that new swing back to good use and has displayed his power more than once.

Alonso started off 0-for-4 in the opener and the hot takes were piping hot. He came back in game two and showed why the Indians signed him to fill the power void left by Carlos Santana.

With a 1-0 count, in the top of the first inning of game two of the series, Alonso barreled up a fastball from left-hander James Paxton. With the bases loaded, the ball was immediately out for a grand slam, the first of the new MLB season!

Alonso put the team on top early with the blast and Tribe fans everywhere met the new first baseman. Alonso watched as the ball sailed toward the fence and rejoiced as it hit the seats.

Alonso again put his power on display in the Monday night game against the Angels. He drove a pitch high and deep to the right field seats for his second home run for Cleveland.

Alonso’s home runs are not the only display of his power he has brought forth. He also has hit some baseballs right on the nose resulting in outs.

He has hit a couple of balls that died right before reaching home run status. His ability to crack the ball all over the yard is a sight for sore eyes.

Alonso also had a double in the series closing game against Seattle. His extra base power is a very strong tool that brings flexibility to an Indians lineup that is already very potent.

With Alonso hitting behind Edwin Encarnacion, who has displayed power in his own right, Francona provides protection for Edwin while also giving Alonso RBI opportunities.

If the power trend Alonso has been showing continues, this could be a great season for the Indians as a power lineup. Alonso will definitely be welcomed with open arms by all of Cleveland if he continues to hit for power.
