New Year’s resolutions for the Cleveland Indians and more

As we enter the New Year, it is time to start focusing on what the Cleveland Indians need to accomplish in 2016. In this spirit, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com lists some keys to success next season. One of the more interesting things he notes is a quotation by Jason Kipnis saying that the team will be “a little more cautiously optimistic” to avoid expecting success. This is clearly a reference to the praise the team received entering 2015, with some predicting that the team would win the division with ease.

In similar news, Zack Meisel of Cleveland.com makes New Year’s resolutions for the Cleveland Indians. Some of the suggestions are quite practical, such as the resolution for Terry Francona to win more games against the Detroit Tigers, but others are downright funny, like Yan Gomes’ mission to forgive Rajai Davis for injuring Gomes’ knee.

Perhaps the proposed resolution for owner Paul Dolan pleases the fans the most. Meisel writes that Dolan should grant the front office “the breathing room” to improve the roster at the trade deadline should the team contend this summer. He notes that the Kansas City Royals added Ben Zobrist and Johnny Cueto to their roster last year despite not having a huge payroll.

Finally, Matt R. Lyons of Let’s Go Tribe argues that the Cleveland Indians do not need to win the World Series in 2016. He writes that as much as we want the Indians to win next year, they still have many years of contention left. The core of the team will remain under team control through 2018, and they should still be young enough by them to remain serviceable. One big question mark, however, is how much those players will cost. As Andrew Schmid has explained, the Tribe’s current roster will become quite expensive in the coming seasons.
